(Getty Images)Manchester United presented their new stadium project last week, and Jamie Carragher couldn’t resist aiming dig at the design. The club’s co-owner Sir Jim Ractfliffe proudly presented the model for the 100,000 seater which will replace Old Trafford starting from 2029 if it all goes according to plan. Most of the club’s supporters welcomed the change considering how OT has become an ageing ground with a host of infrastructural issues. However, not everyone was in agreement over the flamboyant model picked by the management. For his part, Carragher was left in disbelief, noting how the design would have been more suited to a stadium built in the Middle East rather than Manchester.“I couldn’t believe it,” said the Liverpool legend while hosting The Overlap Fan Debate.“It looks like something out of Dubai. When I think of Manchester, a working-class area, the greatest football club in the world, I wouldn’t like that.”Jamie Carragher didn’t like the design adopted by Man United for their new stadiumAdam McKola agreed with Carragher by saying: “Yeah, it looked a bit weird.” The Man Utd supporter identified himself amongst the minority who don’t want to leave Old Trafford, insisting the club would be better off renovating the current ground rather than building a new ‘soulless’ stadium like some of the other venues unveiled in recent years. The debate also involved other supporters, with one of them arguing how football clubs almost never improve after moving to a new stadium, considering this manoeuvre as a mere economic ploy on behalf of the owners to generate bigger revenues and attract casual fans and tourists rather than appeasing the loyal fanbase. In any case, it remains to be seen how this £2bn project will impact Man Utd on various levels over the course of the next few campaigns, and whether it will affect their ability to spend money on reinforcing the squad.
