'INR 4 lakh per month less. We demanded 10 lakh': Mohammed Shami's estranged wife Hasin Jahan wants more money

Earlier this week, the Calcutta High Court directed India pacer Mohammed Shami to pay INR 4 lakh per month in alimony to his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan and their daughter. This was a significant development in a legal battle that has lasted over six years. As per the court's order, Shami must pay Jahan INR 1.5 lakh monthly and INR 2.5 lakh to their daughter. The couple, who married in 2014, have been embroiled in a bitter legal dispute since their separation in 2018 after Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence and adultery. The allegations led to a lengthy and high-profile legal fight; however, while Jahan is thankful for the judgment in her favour, she insisted that the amount Shami has been asked to pay is less in terms of the lifestyle he leads. Jahan has demanded INR 10 lakh per month.

“The way he leads his lifestyle, INR 4 lakh is less. We demanded INR 10 lakh four years ago. The cost of living has increased now. And we will demand it again. This judgment is a big win for me. I'm thankful to Imtiaz bhai (Jahan's advocate) and the Hon'ble Judge of the High Court. But I still think we should be getting a higher amount of money so I can take care of our daughter and meet her needs,” Jahan told PTI.

Imtiaz Ahmed, Jahan’s advocate, described the court order as a landmark step in the prolonged struggle but also vouched for the amount to be increased to INR 10 lakh per month.

“There is a high chance that when they return to the trial court to conclude the hearing on maintenance, it might be upgraded to ₹6 lakh because the claim of Hasin Jahan in her maintenance application was for ₹7 lakh and ₹3 lakh,” Ahmed said, as quoted by NDTV.

Legal battle

The verdict comes after years of courtroom proceedings that began in 2018 when Jahan filed a petition in the Alipore court accusing Shami and his family of domestic abuse. The court had initially granted ₹80,000 per month as interim maintenance for their daughter.

While Shami has largely remained silent in public about the matter, the court’s directive now legally binds him to the monthly payment until further decision from the trial court.
