Liverpool could compound Arsenal misery on day title is mathematically confirmed

Liverpool could be crowned Premier League champions when they host Arsenal on 10 May, which would pile the misery on their title rivals.

The Gunners have emerged as the Reds' closest challengers in the top flight this season. But the weekend's results have put Arne Slot's men on the cusp of winning their first title for five years.

Arsenal were beaten by West Ham at home on Saturday afternoon, spurning the chance to temporarily close in on Liverpool. On Sunday, the Reds took full advantage of that slip up by comfortably defeating Manchester City.

The win at the Etihad means that Slot's side are now 11 points clear at the top of the table. Liverpool have 11 matches left to play, while Arsenal do have a game in hand over the runaway leaders.

If they win all 12 of their remaining games, the Gunners' highest possible points total would be 89. Liverpool meanwhile can finish on 97 points if they win all 11 of their remaining matches.

The title rivals will actually meet on May 10, three games before the end of the campaign. If they beat the Gunners that day, then Liverpool will have confirmed their title win.

The title could well be confirmed before that point though, which means that Arsenal will have to give Liverpool a guard of honour ahead of the clash at Anfield. The Gunners still have to face high-flying Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Fulham and Bournemouth before taking on the Reds.

Slot's side meanwhile face struggling Leicester and Southampton before hosting Arsenal. Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has admitted the title race is now out of his side's hands.

"It’s not in our hands. For me, I’m really, really annoyed with the things that were in our hands that we didn’t do as well as we possibly could and that’s the performance," he said after the defeat to West Ham.

"The team that we played today, me included 100%, were nowhere near the levels that we have to hit to have the opportunity to win a Premier League game today. We were very consistent, yes, but football is about what you do today and today, it was nowhere near."

Slot meanwhile is trying to keep his side focused on the task at hand. He said on Sunday: "The fans can sing whatever they want, I think they’ve sung it for quite long already, but we know as a team how hard we have to work for every single win.

"It was only three days ago, somebody asked me if we’d had a dip on Wednesday. I don’t believe that as well as I am calm now about this win. I have said many times it is so hard to judge the league table before every single game is played.

"In every other league, I think a lead like this would be very comfortable – except for this one because in this league every single game gives you a lot of challenges, even Plymouth Argyle gave us a lot of challenges."
