Liverpool have endured a difficult Premier League campaign under Arne Slot, which has seen them fall well off the pace of league leaders Arsenal.Ahead of the Burnley fixture, it is now 11 games unbeaten across all competitions for the Reds. However, a number of their recent Premier League matches have ended as stalemates. What does Arne Slot need to do vs Burnley to keep Liverpool fans off his back?Liverpool drew 0-0 with Arsenal last week, following on from the points being shared in meetings against the likes of Fulham and Leeds United (twice). As a result, while the Merseyside outfit do currently occupy fourth place, just four points separate them from Fulham, who are ninth. With just over half a season to go, there are no guarantees Liverpool will be playing Champions League football come 2026/27.They are already eight points adrift of Aston Villa, and a resurgence from Chelsea or Manchester United under new managers could easily see the Reds drop out of the top four.MORE LIVERPOOL STORIESIn turn, when speaking ahead of the Burnley tie, Slot commented on the financial impact that no Champions League football has had on the club previously, and stressed the importance of qualifying for the competition. As per BBC Sport, he said: “So still a lot to play for in the league, because we know how important it is for any club, especially this club, to qualify for the Champions League.“It didn’t happen a few years ago and that had a big financial impact on this club. We are aware of the importance of Champions League qualification but we are also aware of the fact that this league is stronger than ever.“That is what we have to do really well in the league and we also have the FA Cup and the Champions League to fight for.”How will Liverpool turn things around if they fail to get Champions League football in 25/26?Arne Slot expressed concern about missing out on top-tier European football in his pre-Burnley press conferenceFSG have put Liverpool in good financial shapeIt’s easy to see why Slot may be concerned about how having no top-tier European football would impact Liverpool from a financial perspective. However, unlike some other clubs that rely heavily on the competition to stay afloat and avoid PSR issues, Liverpool can survive without Champions League football. The main reasons for this were explained by finance expert Kieran Maguire in October 2025, who stated that the club would be fine without the prize money from the competition for one season, and maybe even two.He said: “They’ve got an awful lot of leeway, Liverpool, because FSG run quite a conservative ship, so that they’ve not incurred huge losses.“So one year out of the Champions League is something which they can deal with easily, two years is imperfect, if it gets to three, then you’ve got a problem, but I think we’re a long way off that.“The recent expansion of Anfield, the new deal with Adidas, I suspect there will be a renewal of the deal with Standard Chartered as well. They will prime the pump very well as far as the money coming into the club is concerned.“Champions League participation, it’s desirable but not essential, simply because Liverpool are such a well-run club on other issues that they can survive without it.”
