ATP Tour Announces Punishment Decision on Daniil Medvedev After Ugly Incident

Daniil Medvedev is once again making headlines for something other than his tennis. After a frustrating loss to Matteo Berrettini at the Monte Carlo Masters, Medvedev is reportedly set to be fined following an angry outburst that saw him take his frustrations out on his racket.

It was one of those nights where very little seemed to go right for Medvedev. Errors piled up, momentum slipped away, and his emotions boiled over as the match wore on. While that fiery side has always been part of his personality on court, tournament officials clearly felt he crossed the line this time around.

TNT Sports confirmed the same on X saying, “Daniil Medvedev has been fined €6000 (£5200) for smashing his racquet at the Monte-Carlo Masters.”

A Performance to Forget for Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev had one of the worst nights of his career in Monte Carlo, and by the end of it, he was smashing rackets, arguing with himself and walking off the court without a single game to his name.

Nothing clicked for Medvedev from the start. His serve was all over the place, the unforced errors kept piling up and he looked completely lost trying to handle the slower clay conditions. Meanwhile, Matteo Berrettini was playing lights out. Every big shot seemed to land, his serve was untouchable and he never allowed Medvedev any chance to get back into the match.

The breaking point came early in the second set when Medvedev dropped serve again. He slammed his racket into the clay over and over, threw it across the court and kept hitting it until it was basically in pieces. He then dumped the remains into a nearby trash can while the crowd watched in disbelief.

It was not just a bad look, it is also likely going to cost him financially. Medvedev was hit with a code violation during the match and is expected to receive a fine from the ATP for the outburst.

For Berrettini, it was one of the cleanest performances of his career. For Medvedev, it was the kind of match that will be hard to forget for all the wrong reasons.
