Grand National results LIVE: Full 1-2-3-4-5 as I Am Maximus wins after horse dies

Express Sport brings you live updates from the 2026 Grand National including the Festival's £1millionfeature race.

The 2026 Grand National is upon us at Aintree Racecourse today. Around 75,000 punters will flock to Liverpool for a seven-race schedule which includes the feature race of the three-day Festival - the 4pm Grand National. Nick Rockett will not defend his crown today after being declared a non-runner. That makes his stablemate I Am Maximus, also the 2024 winner, the current favourite for glory in this year's race.

As well as the defending champion's withdrawal, his replacement Pied Piper has pulled out because he's lame. Imperial Saint therefore steps in while Amirite replaces a third absentee, Spillane's Tower, who instead ran in Thursday's Grade 1 Aintree Bowl in which he pulled up.

Winner Willie Mullins speaks

Trainer Willie Mullins has won the last three Grand Nationals in a row.

He says of I Am Maximus: "He got a fantastic ride. It was a good call to stick with Aintree with him, rather than go down the Gold Cup route.

"It's hard to win with top weight but maybe the modern National is changing and we have to look at it differently. This is the race we aspire to win when we go into racing."

Updates on all the horses and jockeys who fell to come.

Winning jockey Paul Townend, who has completed the Gold Cup and Grand National double now this season, says of I Am Maximus: "He's tough isn't he?

"He still didn't travel with the enthusiasm of the first year but the cheekpieces helped in the middle of the race.

"He's a really, really good horse, that's why. He wasn't telling me not to ride him. He's so good. He's got such an engine and will gallop to the end of the world for you."

'You've got a chance when you ride for Willie Mullins'

Quai De Bourbon is The Scout's outsider tip for today's Grand National - and jockey Donagh Meyler is optimistic.

Meyler won the Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse on Monday aboard Soldier in Milan.

He tells BOYLE Sports: "Riding for the master Willie Mullins means you have a chance.

"I got a phone call last week from David Casey wondering whether I'd ride for Willie in the race. Quai De Bourbon finished third in the Irish National last year and he should stay the trip.

"I don't know a whole lot about him, just his form. That reads okay and riding for Willie in an English National you must have a chance.

"I've ridden in two past Grand Nationals. Farouk D'Alane was pulled up and I fell on Measureofmydreams."

Patrick Mullins denied prize money

Last year's winning jockey, Willie Mullins' son Patrick Mullins, is instead aboard Grangeclare West this year, who comes in at around 9-1.

He told the Racing Post: "I can't wait to ride Grangeclare West. It's a pity I'm not getting back aboard Nick Rockett, but this guy is a fantastic substitute.

"I know people say nowadays your best chance in the race is your first go and Grangeclare West has been around there already, but we know he stays and jumps and likes the track so he should be bang there with a chance.

"You don't have to look too far back to see Leighton Aspell won back-to-back Grand Nationals on different horses so it can be done."

But due to racing rules, with Patrick Mullins an amateur - he won't receive a single penny of prize money if he wins the race. Just as he didn't last year.

I Am Maximus' bid for history

Did you know? Red Rum remains the only horse to win the Grand National three times.

Tiger Roll joined him as a legend with back-to-back wins in 2018 and 2019 before being denied a hat-trick chance in 2020 by COVID.

Only two other horses since 1900 have won the Grand National more than once.

Poethlyn who won in 1918 and 19119.

And Reynoldstown, who also managed back-to-back victories in 1935 and 1936.

Can I Am Maximus copy them?

Get On George dies

Tragic news from Aintree.

ITV Racing host Ed Chamberlin paused his broadcast to say: "Sorry for looking at my phone while you guys were talking there but it is the news about Get On George. He was pulled up and quickly dismounted.

"Aintree say he was assessed on course by their expert veterinary team and it was decided the best course of action for the horse's welfare was for him to be put down. It's described as humanly euthanised.

"They say their heartfelt condolences are with connections. We echo that, to the Parkinsons, the Smiths - Sue Smith actually owns the horse as well.

"I always try and get the groom's name as you know and it's Riley, Paul Riley, who know has to deal with that. Our deepest sympathies to you all."
