Pakistan On High Alert After Terror Attack Threat During ICC Champions Trophy

Pakistan have been put on high alert due to the possibility of a terrorist attack during the ICC Champions Trophy . According to a report by CNN-News18, Pakistan’s Intelligence Bureau issued a high alert on Monday, warning the security forces of the suspected abducting of foreign guests attending the ICC Champions Trophy by extremist groups, including Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and other Balochistan-based groups.

The news comes as a big setback to Pakistan Cricket Board ( PCB ) who are trying to restore cricket in the country. Cricket was banned in Pakistan for over a decade after a terror attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team in 2009. In the last few years, Pakistan managed to successfully host top teams. The ICC Champions Trophy is the first ICC tournament they are hosting after 26 years, and the recent threat puts their reputation at stake.

Notably, India had already raised concerns about security issues in Pakistan and refused to tour the country, forcing the PCB to agree to the hybrid model, with India's matches being played in Dubai. Meanwhile, security has been stepped up in Pakistan following the intel inputs.

Pakistan On Verge Of Early Exit Pakistan have been poor in the ICC Champions Trophy. They lost the first game to New Zealand by 60 runs before losing to India by six wickets. The defeat to India has almost knocked them out of the semifinal race. The hosts would need no less than a miracle to qualify for the semifinal. For Pakistan to qualify, they would need Bangladesh and India to beat New Zealand. Pakistan would also need to beat Bangladesh to stay alive. The margin of Pakistan's win and New Zealand's defeats should be big enough to push Pakistan's run rate above New Zealand and Bangladesh. If New Zealand beat Bangladesh on Monday, Pakistan will be knocked out.
