Pakistan, on the other hand, are on the verge of being knocked out of the Champions Trophy following two losses in as many games. Pakistan lost their opening match against New Zealand by 60 runs in Karachi on 19 February. Despite being the hosts, Pakistan are likely to become the first team to be eliminated from the competition if the results of other Group A matches don’t go their way.

Pakistan intelligence warns of alleged terror plot

Reports have surfaced indicating that the ongoing Champions Trophy in Pakistan may be a potential target for terrorist attacks. According to CNN-News18, Pakistan’s intelligence bureau has issued a high alert, warning security forces about a possible plot targeting foreigners during the ICC event. The alert reportedly names several terror groups operating in Pakistan, including Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), ISIS, and various Balochistan-based outfits.

As per reports, the alleged terror plot includes the kidnapping of foreign visitors for ransom. In response, the Pakistan security forces have reportedly deployed more protection for teams and players.

Pakistan are hosting an ICC tournament for the first time since the 1996 Cricket World Cup. International cricket had completely disappeared from Pakistan following a terror attack on Sri Lanka cricket team’s bus in Lahore in 2009. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made efforts to bring back cricket to the country and they succeeded when the ICC awarded them the hosting rights for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan due to political reasons and safety concerns. The ICC then moved all of India’s matches to a neutral venue in the UAE. Even Pakistan travelled to Dubai to play their Champions Trophy clash against India despite being the host nation. The semi-final and the final are also slated to be held outside the country.
