Carlos Alcaraz is off to a winning start to the first of two home clay tournaments, the 2026 Barcelona Open. The men's world No. 2 marked his playing return to Spanish soil after 12 months with a convincing first-round, 6-4, 6-2 victory against Otto Virtanen on Tuesday (14 April). He overcame a wrist issue towards the end of the first set to breeze past the world No. 130 in their first professional tennis matchup. Next up for world No. 2 Alcaraz is Czechia’s Tomáš Macháč, who came from behind to defeat Sebastián Báez 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the Catalan capital.Amid an uncharacteristic start strewn with rushed, unforced errors, Alcaraz fought to save three break points at 2-2 before setting up his first break point with a ferocious forehand winner down the line.At 5-4 up, the Spaniard took a medical time out for his right wrist, returning to the court with bandages covered by his sweatband. Alcaraz managed to regain his flow and secured the first break of the day to take the opening set in just under an hour. The second set began with an exchange of breaks before the home hero broke away with his own double break in Barcelona. A fourth break of the afternoon was the decisive one for the top seed, closing with a 67 per cent serving percentage.Alcaraz can reinstate his spot as world No. 1 if he clinches his third Barcelona title, as Jannik Sinner is not competing this week at either the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona or in Munich.
