Naqvi, who has been serving as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman since February 2024, took over after the ACC board met virtually on Thursday. “I am deeply honoured to assume the presidency of the Asian Cricket Council,” said Naqvi in an ACC statement.

“Asia remains the heartbeat of world cricket, and I am committed to working with all member boards to accelerate the game’s growth and global influence. Together, we will unlock new opportunities, foster greater collaboration, and take Asian cricket to unprecedented heights. I also extend my sincere thanks to the outgoing ACC President for his leadership and contributions to the ACC during his tenure,” Naqvi added.

Under Naqvi, the PCB recently hosted the Champions Trophy - an ICC event after 29 years. However, as the head of the ACC, his biggest challenge will be to hold the Asia Cup, scheduled for September. Originally allotted to India, the Asia Cup is set to be held in a neutral country - either in the UAE or Sri Lanka - keeping in mind the fact that India and Pakistan have decided not to visit each other’s country for the next cycle.

This decision was formalised at the time of selling the media rights for the Asia Cup a couple of months ago.
