ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals 2025: Seeds fall as Dang Qiu, Qian Tianyi/Chen Xingtong, Hirano Miu suffer shock defeats

The former European table tennis champion Dang Qiu suffered a shock second-round defeat at the 2025 ITTF World Championships Finals in Doha, Qatar, on Monday (19 May), exiting at the round of 64 to Tom Jarvis.

Englishman Jarvis, the world number 143, took down the 10th-seeded Qiu after holding off a comeback from his German opponent.

Jarvis had opened up a 3–0 lead on the back of three close games, 11–9, 11–9, 11–8, before Qiu fought back with three of his own: 11–9, 11–1, 11–6.

In the decider, Jarvis held his nerve to beat the man ranked 132 places higher at number 11, closing out the 4–3 win by taking the seventh frame 11–8.

While that was an upset against Germany, the German women's doubles team pulled off two big wins of their own.
