NEW DELHI: In yet another milestone to his storied career, Rohit Sharma on Sunday became the second-most capped player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history during the third match of IPL 2025 between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings With Mumbai winning/losing the toss and Rohit making the playing eleven, it marked his 258th appearance. The match, held at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, saw Rohit edge past Dinesh Karthik (257 matches) and now trail only MS Dhoni, who leads the chart with 265 IPL appearances.Rohit’s journey in the IPL began back in 2008 with the Deccan Chargers before he became the face of Mumbai Indians, captaining the side to five IPL titles.Over 17 seasons, he has amassed 6628 runs, including 2 centuries, and maintained a solid average of 29.72. Beyond his batting, Rohit has also contributed with the ball early in his career and holds over 100 catches, showcasing his all-round value. His latest milestone comes during an intense fixture often dubbed the "El Clasico of IPL".Despite no longer leading the side, Rohit remains a central figure for Mumbai, especially in a transitional phase following Hardik Pandya ’s appointment as captain and the absence of key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik himself (suspended for one match due to over-rate violation). With the pressure mounting and Mumbai looking to bounce back from a poor 2024 campaign, Rohit's experience and presence are more valuable than ever -- not just for his runs at the top of the order, but for his calm leadership in crunch moments.
