The Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL always seems to find ways to get to Ashwin’s nerves. In a recent game, he was given out LBW on R Sai Kishore’s bowling when the ball had clearly pitched outside the leg-stump, prompting the former India spinner to say a few words to the umpire before smashing his bat on his pads.

On Saturday, he was left seething after seeing his team, Dindigul Dragons, miss three run-out chances on the same ball against Siechem Madurai Panthers in the 11th match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) at Salem.

This time, though, his team gave him enough reason to rejoice after the triple run-out miss. The Madurai Panthers could only reach 150/8 with Atheeq Ur Rahman top-scoring with a 41-ball 50, thanks to two-wicket spells from Periyaswamy and DT Chandrasekar.

In reply, Ashwin, opening the batting, hit a nice 49 (29) with six fours and three sixes, before top-scorer Shivam Singh (86 off 41) and Hunny Saini (14 off 7) finished things off in less than 13 overs.

How the hilarious run-out unfolded

It happened on the second-last ball of the first innings. Ganeshan Periyaswamy bowled a wide yorker to Gurjapneet Singh, who reached out to slice it to covers. Ashwin gathered and threw it at the non-striker’s end but missed, and the bowler hadn’t come back in time to grab it either. This allowed the first bonus run.

Ashwin’s throw was covered by the deep square leg fielder running in, who collected and aimed at the striker’s end as the batters were stealing the over-throw. But it was also mis-directed and the wicketkeeper, Baba Indrajith, didn’t get behind the ball either.

The ball went past him and the batters set off for a second bonus run. Even the third throw missed the bowler and the stumps but was backed up and the batters didn’t run again, happy with three runs. The cameras panned to Ashwin who was visibly angry but tried to keep his calm.
