PRESIDENT AND PRESIDENT-ELECT

On 9 April, IOC President Thomas Bach and President-elect Kirsty Coventry chaired an IOC Executive Board (EB) meeting held in hybrid format at Olympic House. IOC Vice-President Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant and EB member Nenad Lalovic attended the meeting in person. The EB received updates from the Olympic Programme Commission, and Coordination Commissions and Organising Committees for the Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 and French Alps 2030.

The event programme and athlete quotas for LA28 were approved by the IOC EB. With a total of 351 medal events, 22 more than at Paris 2024 (329), the LA28 programme maintains the core athlete quota of 10,500, with an extra 698 quota places allocated for the five sports proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee (baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash). For the first time in history, all team sports will have at least the same number of women’s teams as men’s teams, with water polo adding two women’s teams. Full details here.

During its meeting, the IOC EB also approved the IOC’s countersigning of the French Alps 2030 Olympic Host Contract. This is an important milestone, as it allows for the formal start of work and engagement with the newly formed Organising Committee. Full news release here.

Earlier in the week, the IOC President and President-elect attended remotely a meeting of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
