Is another India–Pakistan blockbuster brewing? BCCI’s call sparks buzz

Anticipate another India vs Pakistan match in autumn, as the bitter rivals may square off again at the Asian Games, one of sports' most intense arenas. The tournament is confirmed to take place in the T20 format, and India will send full-strength men's and women's teams to Aichi-Nagoya in September and October. In 2026, cricket will only make its fourth appearance at the Asian Games, which is shockingly little considering how popular the sport is throughout Asia.

Although previous competitions lacked international status, the discipline had its medal debut at Guangzhou 2010 and returned at Incheon 2014. Cricket made a comeback in Hangzhou 2023 after being removed off the Jakarta 2018 program, this time with full international recognition from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Men's and women's contests have been held separately in every edition to date, always in T20.

After winning gold in both the men's and women's divisions in Hangzhou 2023, India is the current double champion. The results highlighted the shifting competitive balance beneath the regional powerhouses, with Bangladesh winning bronze in both categories, Sri Lanka winning the women's event, and Afghanistan taking silver in the men's. Previously, Sri Lanka (men) and Pakistan (women) won gold in Incheon 2014, while Bangladesh (men) and Pakistan (women) took first place in Guangzhou 2010.

A possible match between India and Pakistan would have multiple levels of resonance. In addition to the spectacle and media appeal, these matches frequently condense years of rivalry into a few intense overs, where medals are determined by middle-order temperament, fielding vigor, and bowling strategies during the powerplay. It will be difficult for India's men, who enjoy multi-team knockout dynamics, and women, who have developed a strong T20 core, to control expectations while quickly adjusting to conditions in Japan.

The Asian Games seem destined to be a launching pad for a bigger platform in the future. There is additional urgency and significance because cricket is expected to return to the Olympic Games in 2028 in Los Angeles, more than a century after Paris 1900. Aichi-Nagoya 2026 will showcase tales that conclude beneath the Olympic rings while presenting medals.
