Photo by AFPThe 19-year-old Philippine sensation stunned the tennis world this month by defeating world number 25 Jelena Ostapenko, reigning Australian Open champion and world number five Madison Keys and five-time Grand Slam winner and world number two Iga Swiatek.Her incredible run ended in the semifinals, where she lost to world number four Jessica Pegula after a hard-fought match on Friday.Despite the defeat, Eala is guaranteed US$332,160 in prize money, according to the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) website.For comparison, this year's Miami Open finalist will receive $597,890, while the champion will earn $1,124,380.Before the tournament, Eala’s total career earnings stood at $498,901. With her semifinal finish, her lifetime earnings will now surpass $830,000, a significant milestone for the young star.The 2025 Miami Open also marked a breakthrough in Eala's career rankings. She surged from world number 140 to 75, becoming the first Philippine player to reach the semifinals of a WTA 1000 event and crack the top 100 in the WTA rankings.Eala, the junior U.S. Open champion in 2022, had never won three consecutive matches at any WTA Tour level event prior to this tournament.Now officially one of the top 100 players in women’s tennis, Eala will no longer need to play qualifying rounds to enter Grand Slam tournaments, which is a major step forward in her pro tennis career.
