Women’s Tennis Closes Out Regular Season with Win Over UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai​​'i women's tennis team (8-7, 6-3 Big West) pulled off a convincing win against UC Irvine, 5-2, on Saturday at the Anteater Tennis Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine finished the regular season with a 6-3 record in the Big West which is tied for 3rd with Long Beach State.

The Anteaters took the doubles point, winning on Courts No 1 and 3. On Court No. 2, the duo of Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova defeated UCI's Carolyna Fowler and Yen Huynh, 6-3. UH's No. 1 pair of Sheena Masuda and Peppi Ramstedt were edged out by a break, falling 6-4 to Kayla Meraz and Haily Huynh.

In singles action, the Rainbow Wahine took five of the six singles matches to capture the win. On court No. 1, Vilcek took care of Anteaters' Kaya Meraz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Vilcek has now won four straight singles matches and six of her last seven, improving her record to 9-3 overall. On court No. 3, Peppi Ramstedt kept it going, defeating Amanda Perez in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Homolkova held off UCI's Fowler with a hard fought straight set win, 6-3, 7-5 to record her ninth win of the season.

On the No. 5 court, UH's Makeilah Nepomuceno clinched the match for the Rainbow Wahine with a three set win. Nepomuceno battled back after losing the first set to edge out UCI's Haily Huynh, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

UH's Joelle Lanz was locked in a three set battle with Anteaters' Maily Huynh. After losing the first set, Lanz competed the come-back win, taking the following two sets to notch her ninth win of the season, 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-4.

The Rainbow Wahine will enter the Big West Championship as the No. 3 seed. The Rainbow Wahine will open against the No. 10 seed, UC Riverside on Wednesday, Apr. 23 at 7:00 a.m. HT at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, Calif.
