Women’s Tennis: Macalester Clinches MIAC Playoff Bid with 4

DULUTH, Minn. – Needing a win to qualify for the MIAC Playoffs, the Macalester College women's tennis team took the top four singles matches to defeat St. Scholastica, 4-3 in the final MIAC dual of the season Sunday afternoon at the Duluth Indoor Sports Center. The Scots (10-8) finished fifth in the MIAC standings with a 5-5 record in conference play and will face fourth-place St. Catherine in the quarterfinals. The Saints end their season at 4-17, 1-9 MIAC.

In doubles play, seniors Savannah Haugen (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) and Elizabeth Trevathan (St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Academy) were victorious at No. 1 doubles, beating Paula Sendele and Sophia Cosgrove, 7-5. St. Scholastica won the other two doubles matches to secure the doubles point.

In singles, first year Darrian Streater (Redmond, Ore./Redmond Proficiency Academy) dispatched Renata Sosa at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-2, followed quickly by a win from first year Isabella Tamburrino (Memphis, Tenn./St. Mary's Episcopal School) over Claire Rewertz at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-4. Haugen made the score 3-1 with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Cosgrove at No. 1 singles, then Trevathan gave the Scots the win and a spot in the postseason by defeating Sendele, 7-6, 6-3.

Macalester will play at St. Catherine University on Tuesday, April 28 in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs. The first matches are set to begin at 3:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
