Manly Sea Eagles' Tom Trbojevic re-signs, pay cut

Superstar fullback Tom Trbojevic has taken a $400,000 pay cut to pen a one-year contract extension with Manly, tying himself to the Sea Eagles until the end of 2027.

The 2021 Dally M Medal winner was set to become a free agent on November 1, which would have allowed him to negotiate with rival clubs for 2027.

Trbojevic was at one stage reportedly weighing up joining the Super League, according to The Sydney Morning Herald — considerations which received the backing of rugby league Immortal Andrew Johns.

But the Sea Eagles confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the 29-year-old would spend the next two seasons at the northern beaches club.

He agreed to have his wage for 2027 cut from $1.3 million to $900,000, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

Trbojevic said in a club statement he was "so pleased" to have re-signed.

"This club is such a big part of my life and always will be," Trbojevic said.

"I want to be the best I can be next season, and that will be my focus over the next few months in pre-season.

"I think the future looks bright here at Manly, and it's great to have my new contract put to bed."

Trbojevic's recommitment is particularly significant for Manly given the toxic exit of former club captain Daly Cherry-Evans, who announced early in the year he would be departing at season's end.

Losing Trbojevic after the 2026 season would have stripped the Sea Eagles of more superstar power and potentially created another public relations disaster.

The local product has scored 111 tries from 170 games in the Manly strip.

He's been riddled with soft-tissue injuries throughout his career, with his hamstrings causing the most trouble.

He only played 18 of a possible 24 games this season but put together an impressive stretch of football across Manly's last seven matches.

"Tom is so well respected by his teammates and fans alike, so it's wonderful he's extended his stay here at Manly," said Manly chief executive Tony Mestrov.

"He is a natural leader who oozes Manly DNA, and he's one of the best players our game has seen.

"We are all thrilled Turbo will be here for at least another couple of years and I'm excited about what's ahead for Tom and the team."

Johns backed Trbojevic's mooted Super League move on Wide World of Sports' Immortal Behaviour in September.

"He's been very loud about he would never play for anyone [in the NRL] other than Manly," Johns said.

"I think it would suit Turbo down to the ground. [If he was] fully fit, no one would touch him in Super League.

"I know there's clubs have been asking me about him. Do the math, the one I played for.

"But fully fit Turbo would just own it, and [it would be] huge for the Super League. They need more stars going over there."

Trbojevic isn't on the Kangaroos' Ashes tour in the UK, having made himself unavailable for selection to focus on rehabilitating a knee injury.
