Fireworks were a given as four-time Grand Slam singles tennis champion Aryna Sabalenka took to the court against 19-year-old phenom Victoria Mboko, with a spot in the women’s singles semi-finals on the line at Indian Wells on Thursday (12 March).

The Canadian rising star fought hard to bring about a changing-of-the-guard, but the world’s top ranked singles player refused to relinquish her authority over the draw, dispatching the young challenger in straight sets 7-6(0), 6-4.

You could almost hear the court sizzling as the duo went back-and-forth in the California desert, with the morning heat matched only by the action on court. The pair continued to trade points as the first set drew to a close, resulting in a match-defining tie-break.

While Mboko had more winners than unforced errors on the day (28-26), she simply couldn’t get the ball over the net during the tie-break, costing her the first set and reinforcing Sabalenka’s confidence heading into the second.

Again, the rising star fought hard to hang in the match. But a service break at 2-2 betrayed her otherwise stellar play, as the World No. 1 capitalised on the opportunity to win only the second meeting between the two players.

She now holds the edge in career meetings against Mboko at 2-0, with matches between the two players likely to become more frequent as the teenager rises up the rankings.
