Mason Mount could be about to complete remarkable turnaround as 'impressed' claim emerges

The flavours of the month at Manchester United in October are Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but the incumbent attacking midfielder, Mason Mount, has had a good time too.

Mason Mount had a sparkling start to the month with a brilliant goal against Sunderland to set Man Utd on their way.

He then followed it up with a professional and selfless role in the victory against Liverpool at Anfield before sitting out the game against Brighton due to a minor knock.

Injuries have robbed Mount of precious momentum in the past as well, but he could be about to complete a remarkable turnaround finally, as United in Focus can exclusively reveal he has turned eyes beyond Man Utd.

Mason Mount catches Thomas Tuchel’s eye

Mount has come a long way from being described as one of the best in the England national football team camp to not being able to make the squad at all.

He was thrown a bone with Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as England manager, having been the German’s favourite during his time at Chelsea when he won the Champions League.

Still, Mount wasn’t going to be given a place just by virtue of having Tuchel as the head coach, so he needed to impress.

More importantly, he needed to prove he could stay fit for a while, which was his biggest problem, more than his quality.

United in Focus can now reveal, after speaking to insider Graeme Bailey, that Mount has done enough to impress Tuchel, and the England manager is considering giving Mount a first England call-up under his management.

Bailey said: “I am told Tuchel has been keeping a close eye on Mason Mount’s return to fitness and form. He really likes him as a player, and it is not a shock to learn that he is considering bringing him in.

“He will want to have a look at Mount to check on him, Tuchel is clearly already thinking about who is going to be on that plane for the USA next summer, and any player wanting to go doesn’t have too much time to make an impression.”

Mount’s call-up is a double-edged sword for Man Utd

The call-up, if it happens, will complete a remarkable career turnaround for Mount after he was written off due to having two below-par, injury-ridden seasons.

To get in contention for making the World Cup squad after the two years he’s had would be a testament to his work ethic.

At the same time, it will present a double-edged sword for Man Utd, because as his recent knock proved, he is still firmly in the “handle with care” camp.

England’s next two World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania are ideal for him to make his mark, but having just recovered from a knock, Amorim will be sweating over his fitness if he leaves for international duty.

Furthermore, with Amad and Bryan Mbeumo set to leave in January for AFCON, Mount will be the first name on the teamsheet, so adding more games to his schedule is the last thing United would want.

As the model professional he is, Mount will be itching to grab his World Cup dream with both hands because it looked over at one point.

United just have to make sure it doesn’t come at the cost of their ambitions.
