David Moyes has backed midfielder James Garner as a candidate to be selected for England – as well as opening up on talks with Jack Grealish

David Moyes has told Thomas Tuchel he should give serious consideration to calling up James Garner to his England squad. Garner is no stranger to representing his country at youth level and recently admitted that one of his goals this season was to earn a place in Tuchel’s squad ahead of the World Cup next summer.

The 24-year-old has become a mainstay for the Blues since joining from Manchester United in 2022, and his commitment to the club’s cause cannot be doubted. Garner has played every available minute this season and become an indispensable part of Everton's squad.

And Moyes told talkSPORT: “He’s been fantastic since I came in. I didn’t realise how good he was.

“He’s been so good, he’s played great in midfield and I’ve said a couple of times recently he’s getting closer to being talked about for England because of his performances, he’s played fullback as well, he’s done a brilliant job for us.”

Bournemouth's Alex Scott received his first call-up to the senior side when Tuchel announced his squad for the November internationals on Friday.

And although he acknowledged the competition for places, Moyes believes: “I think Alex Scott has done brilliantly for Bournemouth as well and England have got so many good players to select.

“So for him [Thomas Tuchel] to try and select a team, with discussions all week about Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden…

“All I’m saying is Jimmy is one of the best young midfield players who in the future has a chance of getting a call-up.”

But while Garner has never received a senior call-up, his Blues team-mate Jack Grealish is hoping to earn a recall ahead of the World Cup.

Grealish hasn’t featured for his country since scoring in a 3-1 win over Finland last year, and Moyes has revealed he wants the 30-year-old to add more goals to his game.

“Jack’s been really good,” he said. “He’s helped us maintain the ball more, we’re up on numbers in terms of possession.

“His goals have been huge, I’m sort of driving home to him that it’s good being an assist maker but it’s even better being a goalscorer.

“He’s given us a real strength in how he plays. He and Iliman Ndiaye have played really, really well and probably changed the way we are, we wanted to evolve and become better and both those players give us that opportunity.

“He’s an incredible character, loves his football, watches and listens, which a lot of the modern players don’t so much, but Jack loves his football and Tuchel’s got a really difficult job [picking the squad].”
