Manchester United are currently in the process of hiring a permanent head coach and Luis Enrique is seen as one of the biggest challengers to Michael Carrick.

It is hard to look past what Michael Carrick has done considering Manchester United remain unbeaten under his management after five games as interim head coach.

But Luis Enrique’s style of play and experience at the top level of European football is no doubt an attractive option for Ineos.

Should Luis Enrique be Manchester United’s top manager target in 2026?

Luis Enrique has been a success everywhere he has been…

Luis Enrique is not the only option either, there are as many as 12 managers linked with United ahead of the summer.

Gary Neville recently revealed that United have begun talking to managers ahead of an official summer decision, but Rooney has explained why the Red Devils should stay away from Enrique.

Wayne Rooney wants Michael Carrick as permanent Man Utd manager

While Enrique has spoken about managing in the Premier League, it seems Ineos face an uphill battle to try and lure him away from Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking on The Overlap, Rooney urged United to stop chasing after prestigious European managers and prioritise Carrick because of his knowledge and love of the Red Devils.

“I think with Luis Enrique, I’ve been there and we’ve tried different managers. We tried Mourinho and Van Gaal, then we tried the likes of Ten Hag and Amorim, and they don’t work,” Rooney said.

“I just think Carrick makes sense. I felt that from the minute I knew he was going in. He’s a real calming influence.

“I think we’re sometimes quick to overlook what’s right here in front of us and say ‘we’ve got this manager from Turkey or Spain who is going to come in and do this’ but actually they’ve got no interest in the football club.

“At least this will give the foundations for the club to keep building. The infrastructure will be back at the football club.”

Michael Carrick deserves Man United opportunity

Across his two separate spells as an interim head coach, Carrick is still yet to taste defeat as United boss.

Carrick has beaten world-class managers and this season he has immediately restored the bond between fans and the squad.

Just because Carrick doesn’t have league titles and European trophies on his CV does not mean he is not capable of winning them, just that he hasn’t yet had the opportunity.
