Jamie Carragher says Chelsea have another issue just as bad as the goalkeeper situation

Filip Jorgensen will take the headlines for his mistake during Chelsea’s loss to Paris Saint-Germain, but Jamie Carragher highlighted the defensive issues on show in the Champions League.

Chelsea face an uphill task at Stamford Bridge to overcome a three-goal deficit against one of the most deadly sides in world football.

Liam Rosenior must be scratching his head at exactly how his side came away with a heavy defeat. We outplayed PSG at times and caused them lots of issues, just the same old story of silly mistakes.

It’s a really difficult situation for the Chelsea boss now. Does he turn to a low-confidence Robert Sanchez fresh after being dropped, or an arguably even lower morale goalkeeper in the form of Jorgensen?

This is a decision that Jamie Carragher isn’t putting too much importance on, as he thinks the central defenders are just as much of a concern.

Jamie Carragher on Chelsea’s current issues

Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo after the game, Jamie Carragher suggested that Chelsea’s problems are much more than just the goalkeeper.

“Chelsea didn’t deserve to lose 5-2, but they’ve only got themselves to blame.

“You know what, I’ve been critical of Chelsea for a long time and we’ve had debates, but I’m being deadly serious. They can’t go any further until they sort the goalkeeper situation out.

“The new ownership have come in and spent billions and right now, looking at the team, they’ve got some great players in the team.

What should Liam Rosenior’s next move be?🤔

“And I think in these early stages that Rosenior has been brilliant. I thought Rosenior tonight, as a manager, and how he set the team up caused PSG real problems. They didn’t deserve to lose, as in the way the game was set up and how they played.

“But big mistakes cost them, at centre-back and goalkeeper. And that has been an issue and will continue to be an issue for any Chelsea manager going forward when they’re trying to win the Premier League and the Champions League.”

Chelsea’s centre-back issue

The problem Chelsea face right now stems from the inconsistencies at centre-back, as well as the goalkeeping situation.

Trevoh Chalobah and Wesley Fofana have been the preferred pairing for the Blues, but neither player really looks to be at that world-class level that we saw with Thiago Silva.

Fofana was nervous and had a mistake in him, which isn’t the first time we’ve said that this season.
