Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund is on the short-list for Champions League finalists Inter Milan - despite a minimal impact in a red shirt over the past season - but some fans in The Manchester Evening News comments section say that transfer interest from elsewhere shows that Hojlund still has a part to play in the club's ongoing rebuild.

Hojlund has been United's first-choice striker, but seriously struggled for output in the 2024/2025 season, scoring four goals in 32 games. The club are making early moves to address their misfiring attack by bringing in Matheus Cunha from Wolves and negotiating for Brentford ace Bryan Mbeumo, while the likes of Hojlund or Joshua Zirkzee could make way to bring in more fresh faces.

Meanwhile. Inter Milan are looking to their own rebuild, with their aging squad having been thoroughly beaten in the Champions League final against PSG. Hojlund came from Serie A for a potential fee of up to £72million, and he could well return to the league that made his name.

United also missed out on signing Liam Delap, who'd entered talks with Chelsea on the basis of having secured Champions League football instead. Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres are admired at Old Trafford, but those would require sales considering the amounts United have already committed to in the first week of the transfer window.

But some fans argue that the club should keep the faith with Hojlund. Reader Anniemause says: "No point selling Hojlund until [Chido] Obi proves himself. Two goals in an end-of-season friendly against a side from a country with a national team ranked 144 in the world is hardly proof he's ready. United need to go into next season with two ready centre-forward plus the likes of Zirkzee who doesn't seem to be attracting any attention from other clubs), else we could end up like we did this season with just one struggling striker.

"That other clubs see something in Hojlund speaks for itself. Anyway, they need to focus on selling off the surplus players to ensure they have the cash to buy that striker. If the likes of [Marcus] Rashford and [Jadon] Sancho aren't sold then a new striker looks unlikely, and Hojlund, whatever form he's in, will be needed.

"With the likes of Cunha behind him, it may just spark the player that he occasionally shows that he can be."

Commenter 100percentcotton agrees: "He's been playing off scraps for the last two seasons, and should not have had to shoulder the burden of being a lone striker. I think there's a player there, just needs some support and more reliable service from out wide, playing with [Alejandro] Garnacho and you never know when / if the ball is going to come in. Stick with him."

Others have seen enough to want to see more change in the forwards department. Wiganman writes: "I hope Inter Milan are successful in signing Hojlund. Zirkzee is in no way a main striker, but he could make an attacking midfielder. If someone wants to buy him, we should sell."

J Jerry says: "Sell Hojlund and Zirkzee. Get a proven striker. The young strikers can also learn from a seasoned pro. We are building a future squad. Play all the youngsters who are ready for the transition. Keep them if they're good enough. If they're not good enough, sell them, too. But they will need time and trust. They will need game-time.

"Some will take a longer time to come good. Not many young players are like Rooney, Beckham, Scholes or Giggs. Even they took a couple of seasons to settle down fully into the first-team."

Some worry that United could be left short and suffer familiar problems. Garth123 writes: "The problem I see with this move is assuming we get a new striker in, and there doesn't seem to be much movement for a striker so far, then you will be left with just one striker to get you through a season. Obi is the the future, but he's not yet ready, and then United are left with playing a No.10 as a No.9 should their striker get injured. Will that be good enough to get the club back into the top-six next season?"
