With India’s Champions Trophy squad not expected to be vastly different from the one that faces England at home, Jaiswal and Arshdeep might end up featuring in a second ICC event in less than a year.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and pacer Arshdeep Singh have cemented themselves in the T20I format for India, with the former also shining in Tests. Both youngsters could make their ODI debuts in the three-match series against England that gets underway on 6 February.

The senior pacer, who has in all likelihood replaced Rohit Sharma as Test captain, wasn’t likely to feature in the T20Is against England anyway and would have also been rested for the subsequent ODIs. Bumrah’s absence from the Champions Trophy, however, could be a major blow to the Men in Blue’s hopes of winning consecutive ICC events.

Jasprit Bumrah, who had led India in two out of five Tests in the tour of Australia, had missed a majority of the final match in Sydney due to a back spasm that has now put his participation in the upcoming limited-overs series against England as well as the Champions Trophy in danger.

The Kerala batter, however, isn’t likely to be considered for the England ODIs and the Champions Trophy despite having scored a century in his last appearance in the format – against South Africa in December 2023 – and his red-hot run in the shortest format recently.

There’s no stopping Sanju Samson in the T20 format, whether for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL or for Team India.

The Mumbai Indians batter, however, hasn’t been a great hit when it comes to ODIs, in which he made his last appearance in the World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. And he isn’t likely to make the cut for India’s upcoming 50-over assignments either.

Suryakumar Yadav has been doing a stellar job leading the Indian team in the shortest format since being appointed Rohit Sharma’s successor in the role in July, with India winning nine out of 10 games under his leadership.

As for the most successful bowler, it’s left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja with 16 wickets at an average of 25.18. ‘Jaddu’ also happens to be the only Indian with a five-wicket haul in the tournament.

Former opener Shikhar Dhawan, who had announced his retirement just last year, is India’s leading run-scorer in the Champions Trophy with 701 runs at an average of 77.88 with three centuries and as many fifties.

However, with concerns over the fitness over senior pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, the Mumbai Indians captain could be drafted into the ODI side to shore up their bowling unit besides adding a valuable finishing option to the batting order.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya remains an integral part of India’s T20I side despite losing captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav, and has not played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup match against Bangladesh in Pune, in which he suffered an ankle injury that had put him out of action for months.

“His consistency and ability to rise to the occasion also position him as a key contender for a spot in the Champions Trophy squad. India has always celebrated cricketers who can adapt and excel across formats, and Nitish is undoubtedly one such talent,” Prasad told TOI.

Former India wicketkeeper and chief selector MSK Prasad now wants the Sunrisers Hyderabad all-rounder be included in India’s ODI plans and feature in the Champions Trophy.

Nitish Kumar Reddy has been on a roll since the IPL last year, beginning his international journey on a successful note in the T20I series against Bangladesh before scoring an emotional century during the fourth Test against Australia in Melbourne.

However, according to The Times of India, the selectors have now asked Rahul to play the England ODIs in order to get some practice ahead of the Champions Trophy.

KL Rahul was originally believed to have been rested for the three-match ODI series against England, with his spot in the Champions Trophy squad reportedly assured.

The two semi-finals will be taking place on 4 and 5 March respectively, with the first one in Dubai in case India make it that far. The final will then take place in Dubai if the Men in Blue reach the summit clash for the third consecutive time. Otherwise it will take place in Lahore.

India, who will be playing all of their games in Dubai instead of one of the three Pakistani venues, open their campaign against Bangladesh on 20 February. They face arch-rivals and hosts Pakistan on 23 February, before taking on New Zealand on 2 March.

It will, however, take a few more days before finalising on its squads for the three-match ODI series against England and the subsequent Champions Trophy.

As per The Times of India, the BCCI will unveil India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against England that gets underway on the 22nd of this month.

The latest report states that Pakistan batter Saim Ayub completed his assessments with orthopedic surgeons in London on Saturday for his ankle injury, but it will take a week to determine if he can play in next month’s ICC Champions Trophy.

As per reports, the BCCI selectors will only be picking the T20 side by 12 January. The ODI squad for three-match series against England, scheduled for February 6, 9, and 12, and the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy 2025, will be picked around 18019 January.

Fast bowler Mayank Yadav is likely to miss the upcoming home white-ball series against England, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs, due to an injury, according to TOI. The injury-prone Yadav, who debuted internationally during the T20I series against Bangladesh in October last year following an impressive IPL 2024 season with the Lucknow Super Giants, also missed the four-match T20I series against South Africa in November due to injury. The young pacer has not played any matches since.

National Bank Stadium in Karachi, Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium will be hosting CHampions Trophy matches and the revised deadline for completing the renovation work is January 25.

A six-member delegation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) is in Pakistan to assess the preparations for the Champions Trophy in the country. They visited Karachi on Friday.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is still to make his ODI debut but there are strong chances of him being picked for the Champions Trophy 2025 as it has been reported that the BCCI selectors want a left-hander in the top order. Recently in BGT, Jaiswal scored 391 runs in five Tests.

“He’s [Mayank Yadav] is injury-prone because he’s young. I’m looking at his first-class stat, he’s only played one FC game. So, he hasn’t played too much of the longer format as well. I think it’s just sheer pace with Mayank Yadav. There are a couple of other bowlers that are very similar to him that bowl 145-150-plus but I think with young Indian bowlers coming through they bowl that pace. Sometimes, they are thinking right, just bowl sheer pace, if I can get an IPL contract, I’m happy. The end,” Hogg said on hi YouTube channel.

“The medical team is optimistic about Shami’s fitness and he is expected to be a part of the squad for the home series and the Champions Trophy. Shami’s progress since his right heel surgery has been satisfactory but swelling on his knee delayed his return and he was ruled out of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” a report in Telegraph said.

Pacer Mohammed Shami is a certainty in India’s squad for the five-match T20 matches against England that begins on January 22 in Kolkata, says the Indian Express. Shami has not played for India since the 2023 ODI World Cup but it seems the selectors are happy with his recovery from the ankle surgery and ready to bring him back in the national fold. Since returning to domestic cricket last year, Shami has played in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

The Indian Express has also reported that the BCCI selectors have selected Dhruv Jurel as the second wicketkeeper in India’s T20 squad. Sanju Samson is the first-choice keeper while Rishabh Pant misses out.
