Gary Neville doubles down on next manager pick as Man United told what they can't do

The former full-back has made his feelings on a summer appointment clear for Manchester United

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has sent a clear warning to his former club on the upcoming managerial appointment in the summer, and has named Carlo Ancelotti, Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel as three potential options he would like to see at Old Trafford.

United confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim head coach on Tuesday evening. The former midfielder has joined until the end of the season as he looks to help the club finish as high in the table as possible.

Carrick beat off competition from the likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ruud van Nistelrooy for the role. He will take charge of his match on Saturday when United host rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.

When asked by Jamie Carragher on the Stick to Football podcast if Carrick has got the chance of getting the job on a full-time basis, Neville gave a clear answer: “To be fair, I’ve got a lot of time for Ole, I’ve got a lot of time for Ruud and a lot of time for Carrick,” he said.

“They’re great lads, I hope he [Carrick] does really well. There cannot be any consideration that Michael takes the job beyond this season - for Michael and for the club - even if he wins every game.

“We could be sat here at the end of the season where he’s done unbelievably well, fans are up and they’re in the Champions League, it could happen. We could all be getting swayed with it.

“I honestly feel like when you’ve got Pochettino, Tuchel and Ancelotti...I’ve said Ancelotti because he’s 66 years of age and he’s probably got one more job left at club level. If there was one person who has got the patience, composure and experience of the Premier League [it's him].”

He added: “When Amorim was sacked and you started to see Michael, Ole and Ruud, it felt a bit sad. We’re here again.

“We’ve done it twice before with Ole and Giggsy. Liverpool did it with Kenny [Dalglish]. We’ve seen this movie before.

“But, I don’t think there’s any other option for them right now. If they weren’t to get the manager in the summer, there would be massive pressure.

“What’s killed United managers over the last eight years, they’ve tried everything. David Moyes is a certain type, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho are giants of the European game.

“They then got two fresh European young ones in [Erik] Ten Hag and Amorim. They’ve tried absolutely everything.

“They’ve got to remove risks now. Who can handle the media? Who can sort the dressing room and not take any s***?

“Who can handle the owners and get across them? Who plays the style of play and idea that United fans will like to watch?

“Who has got that Champions League experience and big club experience? Tuchel, Ancelotti and Pochettino.

“[Eddie] Howe now, winning a trophy and getting into the top four, has been at a big club. It’s a step up and he’s got that type of experience.”

The comments cement Ancelotti as a manager who Neville would like to see join United in the summer, with the pundit previously outlining more reasons why he would be pleased with the appointment.

The Italian, along with Pochettino and Tuchel, will currently have his eyes on the summer with all three managers leading teams in the World Cup in North America. Ancelotti is in charge of Brazil, while Pochettino will lead the USA, and Tuchel will hope to end England’s wait for a major trophy.
