BIG FREEZE 11 REPORT CARD

ARIARNE TITMUS – OLYMPIC SWIMMING CHAMPION

Costume: ‘Sandy’ from Grease – the character made famous of course by Olivia Newton-John. And she got right into character with a pre-slide strut and shimmy.

Entry and splash: Went down like Greased Lightning. Good balance, great elevation and solid dismount, falling back slightly for a great splash. Importantly, kept the wig on for the entire slide. A high bar to start with.

Best quote: “I’m so nervous! -6 (degrees Celsius) – we definitely don’t swim in that!”

Rating: 8/10

CADEL EVANS – CYCLING GREAT AND TOUR DE FRANCE WINNER

Costume: Max Gawn, complete with bald head and long beard. A smart, strategic move considering the pro-Demons crowd.

Entry and splash: A golden slide. Sent his prop footy down the slide before going down, so a point off for that. But beard and bald cap stayed on for the entire duration. Got ample speed down the slide, leading to a high dismount and strong splash.

Best quote: “(I’m) a very, very shrunken Maxy Gawn.”

Rating: 8/10

PETER DAICOS – COLLINGWOOD GREAT

Costume: The Joker. The second time The Joker has gone down the slide after Liam Picken. Great wig and props to the make-up artist, who nailed it for the Collingwood champ. Exuberant and elaborate after his reveal, Daicos totally owned the moment.

Entry and splash: Great facial expression down the slide. Started fast, but lost a little momentum towards the end. Still generated a decent splash and kept his wig on after entry. The Macedonian Marvel handled it with aplomb.

Best quote: “I feel at home … This was out of my own wardrobe. I didn’t have to venture too far to find out. This is how I dress normally.”

Rating: 9/10

MATT NABLE – FORMER NRL PLAYER, ACTOR AND VOICEOVER ARTIST

Costume: Angus Young from AC/DC – with cap, wig, jacket and a proper electric guitar. Although he wasn’t game enough to take the guitar down the slide, instead swapping it for a toy one.

Entry and splash: Really leaned into the slide down, so he generated a lot of speed. And for maximum splash, entered the water on an angle. Mark Howard declared: “He nails it!”

Best quote: “My skinny little legs with a knee replacement, not sure how I’m going to go down there.”

Rating: 9/10

LIZ WATSON – NETBALL CHAMPION AND DIAMONDS CAPTAIN

Costume: Barbie, inspired by iconic Aussie actor Margot Robbie.

Entry and splash: A huge, infectious smile all the way down. One of the best entries of the day, too, coming off the board and falling on her back for a big splash effect. It looked like the freezing water shocked her more than any other slider.

Best quote: “It’s just chaos, we’re just going to see what happens.”

Rating: 7/10

MATT SHIRVINGTON – SPRINTING CHAMPION AND BROADCASTER

Costume: Chris Hemsworth, dressing up as Thor with wig and hammer. Channelled his inner Nick Riewoldt, completing owning the pre-slide occasion, strutting and posing for the crowd. As Mark Howard said: “If you’re going to go as Hemsworth, you need pretty good guns – and he’s a fit looking man still, Shirvo.” The most enthusiastic slider of the day.

Entry and splash: Despite looking petrified before sliding, Shirvington got right into character, screaming down the slide before holding his hammer up for a brilliant dismount and splash. Of all things, it was the cape that caused him some issues coming out of the water as it got stuck on his face.

Best quote: “I’ve got to fly back to Sydney today, I’m going to be wearing this going through security. They’re going to be going: ‘What the heck is that hammer for?’”

Rating: 10/10

ALYSSA HEALY – AUSTRALIAN CRICKET CAPTAIN

Costume: Sharon Strzelecki – the cult figure Kath and Kim character played by Magda Szubanski. Complete with centre netball bib, wig, neck brace and smeared lipstick. And Healy played the role beautifully, nervously coming out and waving to the crowd. A lovely tribute to Szubanski, who’s going through her own health battle at the moment.

Entry and splash: Had a genuine crack at this. Tried to generate as much speed and elevation as possible, throwing herself down the slide. Terrific splash, helped by a slight angle upon entry. Kept the neck brace and wig on for the duration.

Best quote: “I think I saw Shane Warne out the back!” – an in-character reference to Sharon’s love for the late cricket great on the show.

Rating: 10/10

AARON DAVEY – FORMER MELBOURNE STAR

Costume inspiration: Michael Long, with The Long Walk T-shirt, scarf and broadbrimmed hat. Jason Dunstall picked it up early: “The most nervous slider so far.”

Entry and splash: Looked like he was regretting his call at the top of the slide he was that nervous. Was bracing for impact all the way down but still made a great splash thanks to a high entry. Bounced out the water quickly, but exited with a big smile.

Best quote: “It gives me great pleasure to pay tribute to two guys who’ve had a massive impact, not just on the MCG but in the broader community. In honour of Uncle Mick, I know you’re watching in Darwin, I’m going to get freezing cold for you!”

Rating: 7/10

CRAIG LOWNDES – SUPERCARS LEGEND

Costume inspiration: Mel Gibson from Mad Max, complete with leather jacket, boots and gloves. Extra points for the subtle face make-up.

Entry and splash: Has someone ever backflipped upon entry?! Lowndes might’ve just pulled it off in an attempt to generate as much height as possible. Sarah Jones told Fox Footy: “The flip at the end was crazy!” Powered out of the water too like it was normal pool temperature. What a lad.

Best quote: “It (the track) is a little bit slippery. I think I’ve just got to put some new wets on this sled and try and get down the bottom as quickly as I can.”

Rating: 9/10

MARK TAYLOR – CRICKET GREAT

Costume inspiration: Shane Warne, complete with Warne-labelled shirt, zinc and floppy hat. The bow to the Great Southern Stand pre-game was a lovely touch.

Entry and splash: After a few practice leg breaks, went down the slide at great speed. Then pulled off one of the day’s great entries, raising both arms into the air before making a grand splash. Held the floppy hat aloft after emerging from the water.

Best quote: “I’ve spent 30 years telling people to keep warm in winter – and now I’m jumping into a pool. How stupid am I?!”

Rating: 9/10
