Manchester United frontrunners to sign former Liverpool star

Since Arne Slot's arrival almost two years ago, Liverpool's squad has changed an awful lot.

Indeed, most of the changes ended up occurring during the last summer transfer window but, right from the off, it was clear that Slot's gameplan was completely different to Jurgen Klopp's.

In his first season, Liverpool's system stayed relatively similar but in the 2025-26 campaign, the Dutchman built his own team and the club have been struggling.

A lot of this is down to the many changes that the Reds made in such a short space of time but now, it seems like one of those players that Slot got rid of in the summer could be coming back to the Premier League.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's summer departure is arguably the one that hurt Liverpool fans the most.

The vast majority of the Reds' fanbase believed that the Englishman would see out the entirety of his career in L4 and eventually become the captain.

However, that wasn't mean to be and, in the end, he chose to join Real Madrid to experience football in another way.

Unfortunately, things haven't quite gone to plan with the Englishman often being left on the bench which has resulted in several transfer rumours emerging.

And now, as per an update from Fichajes, the most insane rumour of all has decided to crop up.

According to the Spanish outlet, Manchester United are the frontrunners to sign the Liverpool academy graduate.

The Red Devils are willing to pay around £43 million to secure his services and see him as an 'interesting' market opportunity.

A fee in this region would be 'attractive' to Real Madrid with United looking to strengthen their defence next season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold would never join Manchester United

Even though things ended badly between Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold, there's no way that the defender would ever join their arch-rivals.

Not only is the defender a Liverpool supporter himself but, if he did end up joining Michael Carrick's men, there would be no way back for him at Anfield, even if he begged the club to take him back.

Not only this, but last season, when the Reds won the Premier League, Manchester United failed to even qualify for any sort of European competition with the club finishing the campaign in 15th place.

This season, their position is slightly higher than Liverpool's but, without any sort of European football to worry about, their schedule is much less packed.
