Matheus Cunha scored the first goal of his Manchester United career on Saturday against Brighton and it meant a lot.

While Matheus Cunha had enjoyed a very impressive opening few games for Manchester United, the goal was much needed and long overdue.

Cunha was one of the best players on the pitch for United in the 4-2 victory over Brighton, and his quality and personality make him the perfect United player.

Speaking post game, Cunha stated this was a dream come true, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

“My message to Man United fans… I am one of them”. This is the club I grew up watching and to be here is a mix of sensations. To help them, it is my dream come true”.

The way he celebrated his first goal for the club showcased this.

How Matheus Cunha celebrated his first goal for Manchester United

After his Anfield performance, Rio Ferdinand predicted Cunha would become unplayable, and this came true against Brighton, with the Brazilian scoring a sensational goal.

Cunha picked up the ball on the edge of the area and placed the ball delightfully into the far corner, beyond Bart Verbruggen’s hopeless dive. Following the goal, Cunha ran off to celebrate in front of the fans.

Sliding on his knees, Cunha began kissing the United badge and pointing at the supporters. He then blew kisses to the fans while tapping the badge, clearly trying to show that he already loves the club and the feeling is mutual.

This attitude toward the badge shows the character of Cunha perfectly as he has always spoken about his love of the club, and on his first chance to show it, he made it crystal clear.

The smile on Cunha’s face is contagious and if he keeps this up, there is no doubt that he is going to make a place for himself within the history of the football club.

Matheus Cunha can now kick on at Manchester United

Scoring the first goal for a new club is always a big moment, but Cunha had to wait for his to come.

Post-match, Cunha joked about how badly he wanted to score, and now he has it will be a weight off his shoulders, allowing him to play with more freedom.

“I joked with Bryan [Mbeumo] and [Benjamin] Sesko, I told them I need to have this feeling [scoring], I felt so anxious to be a part of this and when I scored, they said, ‘Look, you can enjoy it now.’

“All [of] the day, the support for my teammates, I feel so good to be part of this.”

Scoring helped both Benjamin Sesko and Bryan Mbeumo kick on for United with both getting subsequent goal contributions and it should also see Cunha’s numbers start to grow.

This will of course be helped by the attack getting better and more cohesive by the day. This is only the start but already Cunha looks like a bonafide success.
