Gary Lineker reacts to what he’s now hearing about Xabi Alonso and Liverpool, ‘blimey…’

All the chatter around Liverpool right now has to do with Xabi Alonso’s exit from Real Madrid, and what that could mean for Arne Slot.

The decision from the Spanish giants to part ways with Alonso has spun a Liverpool-themed web that is proving hard to keep up with.

As one former Red leaves his post at the Bernabeu, another takes his place in Alvaro Arbeloa. He won’t be there for long though, with another Liverpool hero Jurgen Klopp linked to the Madrid job.

How weird would it be to see Jurgen Klopp manage another team? At least Alonso can come to Liverpool…

Back at Anfield, Alonso is being tipped to replace Slot. It’s all getting a bit mad. Gary Lineker certainly thinks so.

Amidst all the rumours and headlines, there is a manager whose fate is up in the air despite correcting the woeful early-season form.

Some Liverpool fans still doubt Slot, and now that an icon of the club is available, there are those who would like to see a mid-season sacking.

Lineker finds it all a bit mad, as he explained on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football.

After learning of the links, he remarks: “Blimey, they have got a coach that won the league last season. I mean, this is a mad world. And they’ve had a good run lately in Liverpool.”

By all appearances, the fanbase is split on this issue. Some think Slot has enough credit in the bank to last the season, while others look at the performances and aren’t convinced things will get better.

Lineker stands in the former camp.

The rest of January doesn’t look too bad at all for Liverpool.

Every game on the calendar is one we should win, and if Slot can do that, the concerns around his future should ease significantly.

By the end of the month, Liverpool could be comfortably in the top four and through automatically to the Champions League knockout stages.

It hasn’t been a dream season for Slot and Liverpool, but there’s still plenty to play for. Sacking him doesn’t feel like the right call, even with a solid replacement available in Alonso.
