Eliud Kipchoge is majestically striding into an even more powerful version of himself. The Kenyan legend is unfazed by suggestions of his retirement that continue to swirl around him or the apprehensions regarding his ability to win another marathon race.“I have nothing more to prove to the world,” he tells Olympics.com in a recent chat from his home in Eldoret. His confidence stems from his marathon dominance, world record-breaking runs, and back-to-back marathon victories on the Olympic course. In a world fascinated with winners, it takes a lot of emotional strength to keep running at the end of an astounding, unbeaten streak of 10 straight marathons. And even in defeat, Kipchoge exemplifies the ethos that has defined and guided him throughout his running career. He is learning from his last three failed attempts to make the podium what his 11 majestic marathon wins never taught him.“I have learnt patience," he says. "I have learnt to handle the challenges. I've learnt to be determined in life, and that pain can resolve into a huge benefit.”The African superstar took up a new role, an athlete representative on his country’s Olympic Committee. After a remarkable international career spanning 22 years, he also has a solid grasp of the difficulties athletes encounter and is motivated to make sure that their viewpoints are heard.“This is a huge chance for me to extend my mentorship outside of running to rugby, football, judo, boxing, and softball. I hope that when my fellow athletes see me here and now, they see determination and are encouraged to push and break barriers.”
