India's Cricket Team Will Make Changes Before Zimbabwe Game

India lost to South Africa in the national team’s worth came in over 75 years when the two countries matched up during the Super 8s of the 2026 T20 Cricket World Cup. Now India must reassess their team members and strategy ahead of their next fixture with Zimbabwe if the team wants to have the hope of advancing to the semi-finals.

India’s batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, spoke with reporters about the changes the team will be making ahead of squaring off with Zimbabwe. Here’s what India will be switching up and how they stack up against the other teams competing for a slot in the semi-final round.

India Wicketkeeper-Batter Sanju Samson May Be Utilized

On Wednesday February 25, 2026, Kotak spoke about the changes India intends to make ahead of the Zimbabwe matchup, saying, “There can be changes, yes. And obviously, it goes without saying that we discussed, because there are two lefty openers, number three is left-handed and opposition’s bowling off-spin. Because in the three games, we lost a wicket in the first over, obviously any team would think. So we are thinking and we will see how it goes because we never decide the team too early.”

When the prospect of utilizing India wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson came up, Kotak revealed the possibility of his appearance in the game against Zimbabwe, saying, “Definitely there will be thought about playing him, there is no doubt. But nets don’t give any indication.”

India’s Chances of Advancing to the Semi-Finals

In order to advance from the Super 8s to the semi-final round of the 2026 T20 World Cup, India must win both of their remaining two Super 8 fixtures. The first game is squaring off against Zimbabwe, which will be followed by India’s final Super 8 fixture against West Indies. Should India lose either of these games, then the team’s hopes for advancing to the semi-finals will be over.

But even if India manages both wins, net run rate (NRR) could decide the semi-finalists. If India, South Africa, and West Indies all finish on four points, the two teams with the best NRR will go through. Given India’s negative NRR, they’ll likely need overtly dominant wins against both Zimbabwe and West Indies this week. This is especially true in the game against Zimbabwe if India wants to erase the gap. A modest victory won’t be enough as big run margins are crucial for the teams that want to advance to the semi-finals.

India will play Zimbabwe on Thursday February 26, 2026 and their game against West Indies will take place on Sunday March 1, 2026.
