Essendon is thrilled to welcome David Regan to its football program as the Club’s new Senior Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Regan joins the Bombers with a wealth of experience from several elite sporting codes around Australia and the USA - including the AFL, NBA, MLB and the NFL - over the last 11 years.

A stint with the Melbourne Demons as their Head of Sports Science and then Head of Strength and Power included a premiership in 2021, Regan’s most prominent success on home shores.

On either side of his tenure with Melbourne, Regan has spent time in crucial roles with some of the biggest franchises in American sport, including three years with the Miami Dolphins (2014-’17) and a year in ‘the big apple’ as Sports Science Coordinator of the New York Mets.

Regan returned abroad to the Brooklyn Nets as their Head of Strength and Conditioning from 2023 until this year, where the opportunity arose to come back to Australia for the Dons position.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to come to a proud club like Essendon and I’m looking forward to working with Mat and the rest of the High Performance department ahead of the 2026 AFL Season,” Regan said.

“It’s rare that you get an opportunity to work with a young and energetic list led by an incredible coaching staff. Coming back from America, I feel that the experiences that I’ve had in the NFL, MLB, NBA and AFL can contribute to the development of the team and give the players the best chance to be at their best every week.”

Regan’s appointment continues the Dons’ off-season focus towards bolstering its high performance area, with Mathew Inness also recently joining as Head of High Performance and Medical.

Essendon’s GM - AFL Daniel McPherson is excited about the new high performance team with the addition of Regan.

“David’s appointment is another really exciting one for us. He has a wide range of experience across different elite competitions, both here and in the US, and has a proven track record, which will only benefit our high performance program more broadly,” McPherson said.

“Having seen how David operates first-hand from his time at the Demons, his ability to form strong relationships and bring great energy to the program to get the best out of players athletically has always stood out.

“We’re looking forward to David starting with the Club – there’s a lot of confidence that he’ll slot in well alongside Mat (Inness) and continue our improvement on the high performance front.”

Regan will commence his role at Essendon ahead of the AFL players returning to training in November.
