Improve or face removal – GFA Referees Manager to error

The Ghana Football Association has sent a strong warning to error-prone match officials to improve or face removal.

Contentious issues have been raised in the Ghana Premier League, including controversial penalties awarded and goals either allowed or disallowed.

In an interview with the GFA Podcast, the GFA’s Referees Manager, Alex Kotey, said efforts are being made to eradicate substandard officiating.

"We've put a lot of structures in place and we are trying to plug some of them [referees] out, but it's been quite slow because we need to be very tactful in doing that.

"We have placed a lot of referees on ice for errors.

"Where you see a referee who is not in a position to be developed, you kick the person out."

One of the most talked-about moments this season was Kotoko’s disallowed goal against Bibiani Gold Stars at Dun’s Park, a decision taken by referee Julian Nunoo.

Meanwhile, referee Daniel Laryea is Ghana’s most highly regarded official, having officiated at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
