Argentina and Spain’s Finalissima clash up in the air amid Qatar suspension

The Finalissima between Spain and Argentina, scheduled for March 27 in the Qatari capital Doha, faces an uncertain future. Following Iran’s recent attacks on bases within Qatar and the broader military escalation across the Middle East, the Qatar Football Association has officially suspended all soccer competitions in the country until further notice.

With 26 days to go before the Finalissima, which pits the reigning European champions against their South American counterparts, uncertainty hangs over the entire Persian Gulf, with countries in the region shutting down their airspace.

The Qatari FA’s decision directly affects the Finalissima - although the event is organized by the country’s Supreme Committee, which will ultimately determine whether the match is canceled.

UEFA, CONMEBOL have received no official word so far

Any final decision will prioritize the safety of both teams and will depend on how the geopolitical situation evolves. Spain is also scheduled to play a Doha friendly against Egypt three days after the Finalissima, while Argentina is due to take on Qatar on Mar. 31.

Both the Spanish and Argentine soccer federations have been on alert since yesterday, awaiting updates. The two organizations have already begun reviewing the terms of the Finalissima contract and examining the scope of the insurance policies typically attached to this type of agreement in case of cancellation.

According to this newspaper’s sources, neither UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, nor CONMEBOL, South America’s top soccer authority, has received any official communication so far.
