Ruben Loftus-Cheek to undergo emergency surgery as extent of horror injury emerges

England star Ruben Loftus-Cheek sustained a serious injury while playing for AC Milan against Parma over the weekend and was stretchered off wearing a neck brace

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is due to undergo surgery today for his horror head injury. The England midfielder sustained a brutal injury while in action for AC Milan over the weekend.

He collided heavily with Parma goalkeeper Edoardo Corvi, with medical staff rushing to his aid as blood poured from his face. Loftus-Cheek, 30, was immediately put in a neck brace and stretchered off the pitch.

DAZN reported that the most severe damage was done to his teeth, while the midfielder was then rushed to hospital. AC Milan are yet to offer an official update but according to Sky in Italy, Loftus-Cheek will undergo surgery for a fractured jaw.

It is expected that the injury will keep him sidelined for months. Loftus-Cheek joined AC Milan from Chelsea in 2023, having come through the Blues’ youth system.

He has gone on to make 94 appearances for the Italian giants and scored 13 goals. Parma boss Carlos Cuesta made sure to pay tribute to the midfielder in his post-match assessment.

He said: “I want to talk about Loftus-Cheek first, I hope he is okay and our thoughts are with him.”

Milan will hope that they have Loftus-Cheek’s services to call upon again sooner rather than later. Their challenge for the Serie A title is faltering under Max Allegri, with Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Parma leaving them second in the table but already ten points adrift of fierce rivals Inter.

Speaking about boss Allegri earlier this season, Loftus-Cheek said: “He’s just getting to know other players on a personal basis, and developing the relationship with everyone, but you can see how he works, very intense when he works.

“He’s won so many, so many things, so many trophies in the past that you can’t help but look up to what he’s done, and have huge respect for the manager.”

The midfielder also underlined his desire to return to the England fold ahead of this summer’s World Cup, albeit his hopes now appear to be up in the air given his injury blow.

He said: “Potentially, but it’s not at the forefront of my mind. A good season might help me get there, but I have to take it game by game. We work endlessly in training every day and make sure we perform. If everything is going well, it will take care of itself.”

AC Milan are back in action this weekend as they welcome struggling Cremonese to the San Siro.
