Jose Mourinho is the shock favourite to become the next Manchester United manager if they choose to axe Ruben Amorim. The Red Devils have endured a horror run under the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss - who has questioned whether he's the man for the job.

Mourinho led the Manchester outfit for just over two years before being shown the door in December 2018, but with Sir Jim Ratcliffe now calling the shots a return to Old Trafford is being talked up by the bookies - who have made Mourinho a staggering 4-1 favourite to become United’s manager for the second time.

Amorim only succeeded Erik ten Hag in November but has unable to turn around United’s fortunes in the Premier League - his side sit 16th. The Special One, who is currently in charge at Fenerbahce but is tipped to leave this summer, led United to sixth and second in his two years in charge. He also claimed the Europa League and the Carabao Cup during his debut season.

Amorim could yet deliver the Europa League himself with the final to come in Bilbao in just over a week. Victory would secure Champions League football, but that will not cover for a horrific domestic season.

The 40-year-old has confessed that he was responsible - not the players - for United's decline. He then said: "If we cannot change that really fast, we should give our place to different persons".

United co-owner Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and the rest of the club's hierarchy will assess Amorim's position once the season ends - even if United beat Tottenham in the European final. Amorim has won just six of his 25 Premier League games with this season United's worst since they were relegated in 1974.

Mourinho has led three Premier League sides in his career - Prior to managing United he led Chelsea in two separate stints and then took over at Tottenham less than a year after his sacking in Manchester.

Since leaving north London Mourinho has coached Roma and is now in Turkey, but looks set to finish the season without a trophy. Now 62, the Portuguese coach has struggled to have the kind of influence he did when he was leading Inter Milan to Champions League success.

If United do axe Amorim but opt against re-appointing Mourinho the bookies have Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna, who was once an assistant in Manchester, among the favourites. Gareth Southgate is also being linked and has not taken a job since leaving England.
