Darwin Nunez given Manchester United transfer encouragement as Liverpool doubts continue

Darwin Nunez has been told he would have a much greater chance of being success at Manchester United than at current club Liverpool. And the Old Trafford side have been urged to consider a controversial move for the striker this summer.

Nunez has 40 goals and 22 assists in 143 appearances for Liverpool since arriving from Benfica in 2022 in a deal that could eventually cost a club record £85million.

However, the 25-year-old has struggled for regular starts since the arrival of Arne Slot as head coach with 29 of his 47 appearances this season having come from the bench. Nunez scored only seven goals in that time and contributed just five to Liverpool's tally of 86 in the top flight as they have romped to the championship.

Nunez is expected to attract offers from interested clubs this summer, with Spanish side Atletico Madrid and teams from the Saudi Pro League among the reported potential suitors. Liverpool rejected an approach from the Middle East for the player in January.

But former Old Trafford forward Dwight Yorke believes his old club can rejuvenate the Uruguay international with a surprise transfer.

"I’m a big fan of his," said Yorke. "I think that I could understand why they would want to change him. He's not quite lived up to the Liverpool expectation and sometimes a new start might be a good thing for a player, rather than being there and just being another number and getting game time occasionally.

"What I see is an individual wanting a platform to become the top man at the football club. He's not going to get that with Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk and the other players who they have there. I think for me personally if I was United, I know the Liverpool and the Man United thing is a bit of a rift there, but I look beyond that.

"I look at the young man who has a good presence, who has a little bit of zest in him, who's got all ingredients to be even better than what he's actually producing at the minute. He's still at a good age. He's now been in England for the last three years or so. He understands English culture."

Speaking to gamblingindustrynews.com, Yorke added: "What he's expecting I think is a new beginning. If I were looking at him from the outside, that is somebody I would take upon to bring aggression. You'd be the top man or one of the top men at Man United. If he wants to go there, you give me something. And I think he will score more goals at Man United than at Liverpool."

Liverpool's championship triumph moved them level with United on a record 20 titles, with the Reds finishing 42 points ahead of their bitter North West rivals - the biggest ever points gap between the two sides at the end of a top-flight campaign.
