Real Madrid's scouting mission is a spanner in the works for Man Utd and their Sandro Tonali interest

Manchester United have been linked with a move for Sandro Tonali but Real Madrid could complicate a summer transfer deal.

The expected midfield overhaul in 2026 means Manchester United have several targets heading into the summer transfer window, one of which is Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali.

Tonali starred against United in Michael Carrick’s first defeat as interim head coach last week, and that only added fuel to speculation that the Red Devils could make a move for the Italian.

Top target Elliot Anderson is wanted by Manchester City, so Tonali was a solid back-up option for Ineos.

However, The Mirror are reporting that Real Madrid have now joined the race for Tonali’s signature.

According to the report, Madrid scouts were present at St James’ Park this weekend to watch Tonali in action against Manchester City.

Newcastle suffered a 3-1 defeat and were knocked out of the FA Cup, but Tonali played the full 90 minutes and provided the assist for Harvey Barnes’ opener.

Arsenal are also credited with interest in Tonali following rumours in the January transfer window that he was on their radar.

Tonali is expected to cost £100m, and with European giants circling for his signature, it seems a summer move for the 25-year-old will not come easy for Ineos.

Man Utd could miss out on top two midfield targets

It is well known in the football sphere that United are ready to spend big on a midfield overhaul this summer.

A Casemiro replacement is a top priority, but the Red Devils also need extra depth with a return to Europe on the horizon. Two top-class midfielders could arrive at Old Trafford in the summer, but Ineos might miss out on their top targets.

Anderson has to be United’s first choice given his Premier League experience and defensive comparison to Casemiro. But City’s interest could see him frustratingly join United’s arch-rivals.
