‘He may want to cancel that trade’: Troy Aikman chides Jerry Jones, Cowboys defense on MNF

As boos rained down on the Dallas Cowboys in their own stadium amid the Cowboys 27-17 loss to the Cardinals on Monday, their former Hall of Fame quarterback was offering some biting words for the franchise as well.

In ESPN’s broadcast of the Monday night matchup between the Cowboys and the Cardinals, former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman, paired with Joe Buck as he is for every “Monday Night Football” game, had some fairly unfiltered thoughts on the Cowboys’ performance and, in particular, on the idea of Jerry Jones trading away future assets in order to help this current version of the team.

Jerry Jones teased on Monday afternoon that the Cowboys had made a trade, and that the details would be revealed Tuesday, the day of the NFL’s trade deadline.

Troy’s opinion?

“He may want to cancel that trade.”

That comment came midway through the third quarter with things not exactly going well for the Cowboys defense. Aikman and Buck were discussing Dallas’ woeful performance thus far, having allowed 27 points to the Cardinals and backup QB Jacoby Brissett through three quarters. The duo had the following to say about the Cowboys’ defense.

Aikman: “I don’t think one player, from what I’ve seen tonight, is gonna make a difference for this group.”

Buck: “In Jerry’s defense, he said as much himself. He said a week or so ago, with regard to his own defense, there are so many players, whether it’s Trey Hendrickson or somebody else that’s been linked [to the Cowboys], he said ‘I don’t think one player’s going to make the difference.’ They’re beyond that right now defensively.”

Aikman: “There’s no question, if you’re talking about Trey Hendrickson, he was on this defense last year in Cincinnati, I mean that was the equivalent of what we were watching here tonight. And he didn’t change their fortunes.”

We’ll find out Tuesday if Jones ended up having the paperwork thrown out.
