Benjamin Sesko apology made after brutal Man United criticism as Michael Carrick gets what he wants

Benjamin Sesko has scored four goals across his last five appearances for Manchester United and has been sent an apology from former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood

Former Premier League manager Tim Sherwood has issued an apology to Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko after his recent run of form. Sesko recently scored the winning goal for United in their win over Crystal Palace last weekend at Old Trafford.

Sesko now has nine goals across all competitions this season, including four across his last five appearances in the Premier League, which has played a key role in the six wins over the last seven matches under interim head coach Michael Carrick.

United signed Sesko last summer from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £74million (€85million), with the striker one of four summer signings, as Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Senne Lammens also moved to Old Trafford.

It was after the 2-2 draw with Burnley back in January, where Sesko scored both goals as United were forced to settle for a point at Turf Moor, that Sherwood gave his initial verdict about the Slovenia international.

"I think the positive is Sesko scoring two goals," Sherwood said on Sky Sports on January 7. "Hopefully he gets some confidence from that. He's took six months to turn up at Man United. I am pleased for the lad, he has had a tough run of it.

"I had him off the pitch at half time, never wear a Man United shirt again. I stand by what I say, he's not good enough to play for Man United.

"He's turned up for one game against Burnley who are going to get relegated. Fair play to him, hopefully he gets some confidence and we start seeing something different from him."

Now, almost two months later, Sherwood has now issued an apology to Sesko as the former Tottenham Hotspur boss explains why he’s been impressed by the United striker, who has given Carrick what he wants with his improved run of form.

“I based my assessment on the Benjamin Sesko I saw playing under Ruben Amorim – a striker who didn’t want to stand up and take a penalty at Grimsby,” Sherwood said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.

"Even the staunchest Man United fans will admit that he wasn’t living up to expectations last year.

"I originally thought he’d turn out exactly like Wout Weghorst did and be another failed signing for the Red Devils, but I’ve been proven wrong and I owe him an apology!

“Michael Carrick has completed transformed Sesko and he’s now playing to his strengths. He’s puffed his chest out, scoring great goals and scaring defenders with his pace. He’s a different player to what he was a few months ago under Amorim.

“As a substitute, he's coming off the bench with attitude and impacting games, which is a manager’s dream for a striker.”
