The Pat Cummins-led Australia were reportedly denied permission to train at Lord’s on Saturday (June 8), three days before the beginning of their crucial World Test Championship (WTC) Final against South Africa, because of the visiting Indian side. According to Code Sports, the Indians — who’ll play five Tests in England after the WTC Final — trained on the day, and the Aussies were told the iconic ground was ‘not available’.

The report added that the Australians were forced to make a three-hour trip to find an appropriate training venue. Media down under is claiming that India was allowed to train at the ground at ‘Australia’s expense’ even though the Tendulkar-Anderson trophy doesn’t start until June 20, five days after the final day of the WTC final. Moreover, India and England don’t play at Lord’s until July 10, the third game of the rubber.

On Sunday, the BCCI uploaded a clip of the Shubman Gill-led side training at Lord’s. It included shots from London and the ground, before showing the team engaged in some stretching and warm-up football in the indoor facilities. Soon, the players stepped outdoors and were seen running and doing some fielding practice. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, among others, were also seen deeply assessing the Duke’s ball.

Later, Cummins was also quoted taunting the English crowd for booing his team during the 2023 Ashes when Alex Carey dismissed Jonny Bairstow via a run out.

“I think this is the best version of the stadium this morning," he said. “There’s no one around, which is great. I’m sure it will be much more civil this time around. Things got pretty heated in the middle of that Ashes series, but I think a lot of them will have learned their lesson and I’m sure they’ll be very polite."

Australia and Cummins are looking to defend their WTC title against a South African side hoping to break its ICC Trophy drought, going on since 1998. Cummins side are coming off a big win in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy against the Indians and then another away one over Sri Lanka while South Africa last trounced Pakistan 2-0.
