‘Let Real Madrid have him’ - Why Barcelona are giving up on Nico Schlotterbeck

Barcelona have been regularly linked with a move for Nico Schlotterbeck but have now reportedly decided to give up the hunt for the Dortmund star.

Real Madrid are now believed to be in the mix to land the defender, with Diario Sport claiming that the word from Barcelona is: “Let Madrid keep Schlotterbeck if they want him.”

The decision has been made because Barca have decided Schlotterbeck “is not what Barça need at the moment” and will instead try to go for Alessandro Bastoni of Inter.

Sport say that Barcelona want more pace in their backline, due to the style of football they play under Hansi Flick, another reason why Schlotterbeck has been ruled out

Meanwhile, Madrid are in the hunt as David Alaba is set to leave the club, while there are doubts over Eder Militao’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Schlotterbeck is expected to cost around €50 million and, for now at least, it looks like he could be heading to Alvaro Arbeloa’s side in time for the 2026-27 season.
