Manchester United have taken a big step forward in the chase for Champions League qualification.

It looks almost certain that Manchester United will be playing Champions League football next season.

The 2-1 win over Brentford has moved United agonisingly close to getting over the line.

But it is not quite mathematically certain yet. Here is a breakdown of what Manchester United need…

With Arsenal and City effectively out of sight in the front two, United are playing to secure third, fourth, or fifth place.

But fifth would still be enough to secure Champions League football.

Manchester United then need only two points from the remaining matches to be mathematically certain of a top five place.

It would feel pretty flat of course if United limped over the line with only two points from a possible 12 in the final four matches.

But it would still do the job.

That’s how low the bar is for United to clinch qualification, after the club’s impressive form under Michael Carrick.

Brighton are 11 points behind United, and if they won all of their remaining games, and United lost all four – they could overhaul us.

United’s final game of the season is away at Brighton.

Hopefully by then we will have earned the points we need.
