Bill Simmons sees evidence of Tom Brady-Bill Belichick rift in email shared by Jordon Hudson

The rift between Bill Belichick and Tom Brady is starting to make more sense to The Ringer founder Bill Simmons after seeing an email Jordon Hudson, the 24-year-old dating the ex-Patriots coach, posted in the wake of a disastrous interview Belichick did with CBS.

Simmons discussed it on a new episode of his show, “The Bill Simmons Podcast,” this week when he saw how Belichick viewed his role in the Patriots’ increased valuation during his tenure as head coach in New England.

Belichick had been in the headlines following the awkward “CBS Sunday Morning” interview and during the ensuing controversy, Hudson posted an email from Belichick in an attempt to defend him and her, after she faced increasing scrutiny for her involvement in Belichick’s affairs.

A majority of the note from Belichick to people involved with the promotion of his new book focused on public relations strategy, but the line about growing the franchise worth stood out to Simmons as seeming to explain “a lot about what happened” between Brady and Belichick.

“It was always like, ‘We’re in this together. There’s no credit.’ But the credit thing was a big part of it and [Jimmy] Garoppolo is in there and [Brady’s] really thinking about — I never wanted to believe it. I never, when [ESPN’ Seth] Wickersham and people like that were reporting about it, and I was like, ‘F–k that. I don’t wanna hear this. Stop trying to cause trouble.’ But there clearly was a ton of trouble,” Simmons said.

“I think that really explained to me why Brady didn’t end up [re-signing] with the Patriots because what everybody was writing about and doing the sports radio topic of ‘who’s more responsible for all the Super Bowls: Belichick or Brady?’ And the right answer was always both. They needed each other and that’s the answer.”

Simmons surmised that the other always must have believed they did more for the organization.

“When I read that paragraph [in the email] I thought, ‘Man, Belichick must have been so pissed when Brady had that Tampa season where he won the title. Because clearly he does give a s–t about all this stuff,” he said.

The PR nightmare that has developed since the interview aired has impacted the way that people view the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.

Belichick and Hudson have become the butt of jokes on both SNL and John Mulaney’s Netflix show.

The new University of North Carolina football coach has also reportedly brought in an outside PR specialist.
