Carew kick off season as reigning champions with win over Burton

CHAMPIONS Carew started the 2026 cricket season with a comfortable eight-wicket win over Burton on Sunday (April 26).

Carew won the toss and chose to field, and they were able to bowl Burton out for 160 inside 39 overs.

Burton lost opener Toby Hayman early on before Joe Kiff and Martyn James shared 39 runs for the second wicket.

James departed for a single figure score before Kiff was also out, stumped by Morgan Grieve off the bowling of Shaun Whitfield.

He had hit five fours and a six in his score of 44, but his wicket sparked a collapse.

Whitfield and Nick Davies did the damage as they took two wickets each in a fine spell, leaving Burton reeling on 77-7.

However, Luke Hayman and N.Jones led the fightback as they shared 64 runs for the eighth wicket.

Jones hit two fours and a six in his score of 31 before falling to Iori Hicks.

Luke Hayman hit three fours as he also scored 31 before he also fell to Hicks.

Hicks also claimed the final wicket to finish with excellent figures of 4-26.

In reply, Carew lost opener Nick Davies early on, but Morgan Grieve and Brian Hall then shared 111 runs for the second wicket to swing the game in Carew's favour.

Grieve hit eight fours and a six in his score of 68 before he was bowled by Morgan Scale.

Hall and Whitfield then took Carew to victory as they got the final 31 runs needed.

Whitfield finished unbeaten on 25, and Hall was unbeaten on 44 as Carew reached their target inside 33 overs.

Carew picked up 19 points for their win while Burton claimed five points.

On Saturday, May 2, Carew host St Ishmaels and Burton visit Cresselly.
