FA Cup draw live: Man City to host Liverpool in blockbuster tie as quarter-finalists discover opponents

Premier League giants Manchester City and Liverpool to face off as Port Vale earn trip to Stamford Bridge in the last eight of the FA Cup

The draw for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup has taken place, with Manchester City at home to Liverpool in a blockbuster all-Premier League tie.

Quadruple contenders Arsenal have been given a favourable draw away to Southampton, while giant-killers Port Vale - the lowest-ranked side left - have earned an away day to Stamford Bridge after dispatching Sunderland this weekend.

The final last-eight encounter will see West Ham, who beat Brentford 5-3 on penalties on Monday night after the drew took place, at home to fellow Premier League side Leeds United.

The quarter-final ties will be played over the weekend of 4 April.

Over the weekend Gunners escaped a scare against Mansfield to keep their quadruple hopes alive, while City eased past Newcastle to do the same and Liverpool avenged their loss to Wolves last week.

League One side Port Vale shocked Sunderland, Liam Rosenior’s side escaped their own scare against Wrexham and Saints saw off top-flight Fulham.

What the FA Cup reveals about English clubs in Europe

Ryan Reynolds and Snoop Dogg might these days be far more visible near the top of European football than Michel Platini – a sentence that would have been absurd in 2008 – but some of the most senior figures at that level still quote the former Uefa president when a particular concern about the Champions League is put to them: “The English are like lions in the autumn but like lambs in the spring.”

First uttered during the “big four” era, that Platini comment was repeatedly raised at some of the engagements around the recent Financial Times Business of Football Summit. It was, of course, in reference to the fact that the Champions League this week has an unprecedented six Premier League clubs in the last 16 – but only two have actually won it in this decade.

Dango Ouattara fluffs his lines as West Ham edge past Brentford on penalties

Brentford forward Dango Ouattara fluffed a Panenka-style penalty as West Ham reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in a decade with a 5-3 shoot-out win.

The Burkina Faso international’s outlandish attempt was easily caught by Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola before Konstantinos Mavropanos converted the decisive spot-kick.

Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen and Brentford top scorer Igor Thiago each scored twice during normal time as an entertaining fifth-round tie ended in a 2-2 draw.

Three-time FA Cup winners West Ham will host Leeds in the last eight, having last progressed to that stage of the competition during the 2015-16 season – their final one at Upton Park.

West Ham beat Brentford

West Ham beat Brentford 5-3 on penalties after drawing 2-2 in normal time!

Every one of West Ham’s penalties was fantastic. Brentford’s Dango Ouattara went for a truly horrific Panenka effort and West Ham kept their cool to slot home all five.

They’ll play Leeds United at home in the quarter-final.

Tonda Eckert wants Southampton players to ‘stay on the gas’ after FA Cup upset

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert challenged his players to “stay on the gas” and strive to mark the 50th anniversary of their only FA Cup triumph by returning to Wembley.

A 1-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage ensured there will be a Championship name in Monday’s quarter-final draw after Ross Stewart’s stoppage-time penalty upset the Premier League side.

Saints are playing their cup fixtures this season in shirts that commemorate the victory over Manchester United in May 1976 that brought the club the only major honour in their history.

Kepa Arrizabalaga impressed by ‘special’ Arsenal duo Max Dowman and Marli Salmon

Kepa Arrizabalaga applauded “special kids” Max Dowman and Marli Salmon after the 16-year-old pair caught the eye in Arsenal’s FA Cup victory at Mansfield.

Mikel Arteta started the highly-rated academy products as the Premier League leaders made nine changes for Saturday lunchtime’s fifth-round trip to a sold-out One Call Stadium.

Dowman impressed on a challenging afternoon in Mansfield where, aged 16 years and 66 days, he became Arsenal’s youngest ever player in the FA Cup on his first appearance since November following an ankle issue.
