Steven Gerrard concerned by Liverpool's stark lack of thrust in attack against Wolves

After scoring five times against West Ham on Saturday, Liverpool showed the more goal-shy side of themselves during Tuesday’s dismal defeat against Wolves.

The Reds breathed fresh life into their top-four challenge after thumping the Hammers, but they did not take that form into the midweek clash at Molineux.

As fans have sadly become used to seeing this season, Liverpool started slowly in the West Midlands, with legendary former captain Steven Gerrard particularly scathing of the lack of penetration in forward areas.

Gerrard slams ‘no tempo’ Liverpool

Gerrard was in the studio for TNT Sports on Tuesday and, just like everyone watching inside Molineux and at home, the Scouser was far from enthralled by a dismal first 45 minutes from both teams.

Asked what Liverpool could do better to cause Wolves more problems, Gerrard focused on the non-existent tempo and ‘penetration’ from wide and central forward positions.

“Liverpool have really been struggling with the speed and tempo the game,” said the 45-year-old.

“There’s no penetration outside or centrally. Aside from one pass from Van Dijk where the ball was a little behind Salah, Liverpool haven’t looked like scoring.”

“They need to change something at half-time, raise the tempo and the speed. Wolves have taken the space away and Liverpool are giving the ball away too easily. They’ve shown nothing in that first-half.

“Having scored five goals at the weekend, you’d expect them to be full of confidence, full of creativity, but there’s been nothing of note, especially in the forward areas.”

The bluntness of Liverpool’s wide areas has been particularly concerning for supporters this season, and with just one shot on target between them all evening, the much-maligned duo of Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah do not look like turning things around based on this evidence.
