Manchester United are reportedly yet to advance any potential interest in Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The future of the 2022 World Cup-winning goalkeeper at Villa Park is uncertain. Martinez was visibly emotional after the Villans' final home game of the Premier League in 2024/25, reportedly contemplating embarking on a new chapter in his career.

Martinez put pen to paper on a new contract just 10 months ago, pledging his long-term future to the club. However, that now seems uncertain. After failing to secure a financially rewarding spot in next season's Champions League, Villa might be tempted to cash in on the 32-year-old, who will turn 33 later this year.

Several reports have underlined Martinez as a potential replacement for Andre Onana. The Manchester Evening News understands Onana is expected to stay put this summer. However, after making a few high-profile mistakes at Old Trafford and beyond, signing a new first-choice goalkeeper has been widely reported.

But journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that any potential move to M16 is still some way off. It still remains unclear as to whether the Reds are keen on a move for Martinez even though Romano claims the player is open to joining.

“Manchester United have not made any bid,” he said on his YouTube channel. “Aston Villa sources also guarantee that they’ve not received any official bid from Man Utd.

“Man United spoke to Martinez’s representatives several times to be informed about the situation of the player. But this already happened in June, it’s not yesterday or today or this week. In June they had conversations about the situation of Emi Martinez.

“Now Andre Onana is injured (hamstring strain), but it’s not a super long injury, [his recovery] is a matter of weeks. So let’s see how this conversation will continue but what’s important to say is at the moment there are still no club-to-club negotiations.

“But Man United are aware of the situation of Emi Martinez. He could be open to joining Man United even if they don’t play European football this season.

“This now depends on United but at the moment I’m not aware of any concrete negotiations or anything close to being completed.”
